The SSP 64 mm Red Speed Burrs are precision-engineered flat burrs designed to bring your home grinder closer to professional-level performance.

Available in two geometries—Espresso (High Uniformity) and Multipurpose—they offer distinctly different grind characteristics and cup profiles depending on how you prefer to brew. Browse compatible upgrades in our 64mm collection.

  • Espresso (High Uniformity) geometry is optimised for espresso, offering a fuller-bodied and more traditional cup profile while retaining good clarity.

  • Multipurpose geometry is designed for high-clarity espresso and filter brewing, particularly with lighter roasts.

Why SSP Red Speed Burrs?

Manufactured in South Korea by SSP Grinding Solutions, Red Speed burrs are precision-cut from hardened tool steel and finished with a titanium-aluminium-carbon nitride (TiAlCN) coating designed to improve wear resistance and help the cutting surfaces retain their performance over prolonged use. In normal home use, this means an exceptionally long service life before replacement is likely to be required. You can explore more in our SSP burrs collection.

The Red Speed coating is primarily designed to improve durability and edge retention. Cup characteristics such as body, clarity, sweetness and flavour separation are primarily determined by the burr geometry, grinder alignment and brewing variables.

Choose Your Geometry

Espresso (HU) vs Multipurpose (MP) at a Glance
Attribute Espresso (HU) Multipurpose (MP)
Best roast range Works across roast levels; particularly well suited to classic espresso profiles Light to medium, especially clarity-focused roasts
Particle profile Espresso-focused, with higher uniformity than traditional espresso burr designs More unimodal and low-fines, with a strong emphasis on clarity
Flavour profile Fuller body, textured mouthfeel and balanced sweetness High clarity, brightness and flavour separation
Dial-in More forgiving for conventional espresso More technique-sensitive and rewards precise preparation
Best for Espresso-focused brewing, ristretto, classic profiles and milk drinks Filter brewing and modern, high-clarity espresso—especially with lighter roasts

Espresso (High Uniformity / HU)

  • Designed primarily for espresso, the HU geometry offers greater uniformity than more traditional espresso burr designs while maintaining a fuller-bodied and textured cup profile.
    • Fuller body and smooth, textured mouthfeel
    • Balanced sweetness with good flavour definition
    • More forgiving dial-in for conventional espresso
    • Works across roast levels
    • Particularly well suited to traditional espresso ratios of approximately 1:1 to 1:2.5
    • Well suited to ristretto, classic espresso and milk-based drinks
    • Best for: Espresso-focused brewing, fuller body, classic espresso profiles and straightforward dial-in

Multipurpose (MP)

  • A clarity-focused geometry designed for both filter brewing and modern espresso. Its more unimodal, lower-fines particle profile helps emphasise flavour separation, brightness and clarity.
    • High clarity and flavour separation
    • Pronounced brightness and sweetness with lighter roasts
    • Clean, distinct flavour notes
    • Excellent filter and pour-over performance
    • Capable of high-clarity espresso, generally with less body than HU
    • Best for: Light-roast enthusiasts, filter brewers and home baristas seeking modern, clarity-forward espresso

Note: If you prefer more sweetness and body alongside good clarity, you may also wish to consider SSP Lab Sweet burrs, which offer a different cup profile from the more clarity-forward MP geometry.

Compatibility

SSP 64 mm burrs are compatible with many grinders using a suitable 64 mm flat-burr mounting pattern, including:

  • DF64 Gen 2 and DF64V
  • Other compatible DF64 variants
  • Lagom P64
  • Mazzer Super Jolly models using a compatible 64 mm mounting pattern

Important: Burr diameter alone does not guarantee compatibility. Always verify your grinder's burr size, mounting-hole pattern, rotation direction and available clearance before purchasing. Burr alignment should also be checked after installation, particularly when replacing the original burrs in grinders such as the Mazzer Super Jolly. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help confirm compatibility.

Installation & Break-In

To get the best performance from your SSP Red Speed burrs:

  1. Re-zero your grinder — Adjust the zero point after installation, as SSP burrs may differ in thickness from your grinder's original burrs.

  2. Allow the burrs to season — SSP notes that coated burrs require a seasoning period, with approximately 2–3 kg of coffee generally sufficient for the initial break-in. You can use the burrs normally during this period; grind behaviour and cup characteristics may continue to settle gradually with use.

  3. Check alignment — Good burr alignment helps ensure optimal grind consistency and is worth checking during installation, particularly if your grinder allows alignment adjustment.

Some users notice changes in grind behaviour and cup characteristics as the burrs season, particularly during the first few kilograms of coffee.

If you're deciding between SSP burr profiles, see our SSP 64mm burr guide.

FAQs

What's the difference between SSP 64 mm HU and MP burrs?
  • HU (High Uniformity) burrs are optimised for espresso, prioritising tight particle distribution and consistency. They deliver balanced shots with good body and are more forgiving with grind adjustments.
  • MP (Multipurpose) burrs use a more unimodal geometry that produces higher clarity and flavour separation. They excel in filter brewing but can also pull excellent espresso with lighter roasts—though they demand more precise puck prep.
Should I choose HU or MP burrs?

The right choice depends on whether you prioritise espresso consistency and body (HU) or clarity and versatility across brew methods (MP):

Choose HU if:

  • Espresso is your primary brewing method
  • You value consistency and ease of dialing in
  • You prefer balanced, full-bodied shots

Choose MP if:

  • You brew both espresso and filter regularly
  • You prioritise clarity and brightness
  • You're comfortable with more precise workflow requirements
  • You mainly work with light to medium roasts
Can MP burrs handle darker roasts?

Yes, but MP burrs tend to emphasise acidity and clarity, which can make darker roasts taste thinner or sharper than intended. If you regularly brew dark roasts for espresso and prefer heavier body and chocolate-forward flavours, HU burrs are often preferred.

Will these burrs fit my coffee grinder?

SSP 64 mm HU and MP burrs are compatible with many grinders that use 64 mm flat burrs, including:

  • DF64 / DF64 Gen 2
  • DF64V / DF64 Pro
  • Other DF64 variants
  • Lagom P64
  • Other 64 mm flat-burr grinders

Note: Always verify your grinder's burr size and mounting type before purchasing. Some grinders may require spacers or alignment adjustments.

Do these burrs burrs need seasoning?

While you don't need to season your new burrs, the standard recommendation is to grind approximately 1–2 kg of coffee to season. This can help improve grinding speed and flavour clarity.

How do SSP burrs compare to stock burrs?

SSP burrs typically offer:

  • Tighter particle distribution and less fines
  • Clearer flavour separation
  • Better performance with light roasts
  • Longer lifespan (hardened tool steel construction)

The difference is most pronounced with high-quality, lighter-roasted coffees where clarity and sweetness matter most.

How long do SSP burrs last?

With proper care, SSP burrs typically last 500–800 kg of coffee (often more) before requiring replacement. Actual lifespan depends on roast level, grind settings, and grinder usage patterns.

Are these genuine SSP products?

Yes. All SSP burrs we sell are manufactured by SSP Grinding Solutions in South Korea and precision-machined from hardened tool steel. We source exclusively through authorised distributors.
