FAQs
What flavour profile should I expect with Lab Sweet burrs?
The SSP Lab Sweet geometry is designed to shift your cup profile toward enhanced sweetness, balanced body, and clarity across brew methods. These burrs are designed with a distinctive cutting geometry that promotes a consistent particle distribution, which can help drive a more uniform extraction and nuanced flavour expression compared with many standard replacement burrs.
Lab Sweet burrs also deliver some clarity and complexity, but not as aggressively as other burr sets such as the SSP multi-purpose burrs.
Flavour profile is of course also dependent on a range of other factors including roast level, and brewing methods among other things.
Are these burrs good for both espresso and filter brewing?
While Lab Sweet burrs work well for both espresso and filter brewing, many users find they truly excel in filter and medium-body styles. Their geometry favours sweetness, body, and balanced flavour, making them especially rewarding for pourovers and drip coffee — though with proper dial-in they also produce enjoyable espresso shots
What’s the difference between the V2 and V3 versions?
V2 and V3 share the same core Lab Sweet design philosophy, balancing sweetness, body, and clarity, but they place slightly different emphasis on brew method.
V2 is the more filter-focused option and is particularly well suited to pour-over and other filter brewing methods.
V3 uses revised geometry with greater emphasis on espresso extraction while remaining well suited to filter brewing.
V3 is not simply an upgrade over V2 — the better choice depends primarily on your preferred brew method and grinder.
What’s the difference between Silver Knight and Red Speed coatings?
Both Silver Knight and Red Speed are durable coatings designed to extend burr life, but they use different coating technologies.
Silver Knight uses a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating that provides a low-friction, wear-resistant surface. It’s an excellent general-purpose option for home use across both filter and espresso brewing.
Red Speed uses a Titanium Aluminum Carbon Nitride (TiAlCN) coating with high wear resistance and long service life. It’s particularly well suited to higher-use setups or users who prioritise maximum durability.
The coating does not change the underlying Lab Sweet burr geometry — your choice between V2 and V3 has a greater influence on brewing characteristics than your choice of coating.
Do these burrs require seasoning or a break-in period?
New flat burrs, including SSP Lab Sweet, often change slightly as they settle in with use. Many users and SSP reps suggest that performance becomes more consistent after grinding a few kilos of coffee (often cited around 2–5 kg), with some experienced users noting continued gradual improvements up to ~8 kg or more. Burrs are fully usable out of the box, and seasoning typically occurs naturally during normal daily use rather than requiring a rigid break-in routine.
Are these burrs easy to install and maintain?
Installation involves removing your existing burr set and installing the new burrs with correct orientation and alignment. As with any precision flat burrs, careful installation helps ensure optimal performance. Ongoing maintenance is straightforward, regular cleaning and occasional inspection are typically all that’s needed to maintain consistent grind quality over time.
Are SSP 64mm Lab Sweet burrs compatible with my grinder?
SSP 64mm Lab Sweet burrs fit many grinders designed to accept standard 64mm flat burrs, including the DF64, DF64V, Option-O Lagom P64, and Mazzer Super Jolly.
Compatibility can vary between grinder models and production revisions, so we recommend checking your grinder manufacturer’s specifications before ordering. Some early Fellow Ode Gen 1 grinders, for example, may not support all SSP 64mm burr configurations.
If you’re unsure whether these burrs will fit your grinder, feel free to contact us before ordering.
What flavour profile can I expect from SSP Lab Sweet burrs?
SSP Lab Sweet burrs are designed to balance sweetness, body, and clarity rather than pushing heavily toward either traditional espresso body or maximum flavour separation.
Compared with more clarity-focused burr geometries, Lab Sweet generally offers a rounder and more balanced presentation while still providing good flavour definition. This makes them a versatile choice for users who enjoy clarity but don’t want to sacrifice sweetness and body.
V2 places greater emphasis on filter brewing, while V3 is more espresso-oriented while remaining capable across both espresso and filter.
