The DF54 is well suited to home baristas looking for a compact, low-retention single-dose grinder for espresso and filter coffee. It combines many of the core features of the larger DF64 platform — including flat burrs, stepless grind adjustment, a plasma ioniser and metal declumper — in a smaller and more affordable package.

Grind Logic supplies the DF54 with an AU/NZ plug and local Australian support. The DF54 V4 is also available with your choice of uncoated stainless steel or Red Titanium-coated burrs.

If you are choosing your first grinder, our guide to choosing your first espresso grinder explains how adjustment precision, retention, burr design, workflow and product support affect everyday results.

Features

  • Low-retention single dosing: The DF54 is a single-dose coffee grinder designed to minimise retained grounds. This makes it easier to change between coffees, measure each dose accurately and keep beans stored separately until grinding.

  • 54mm flat-burr platform: The DF54 uses 54mm flat burrs and is capable of grinding across espresso, filter and immersion brewing ranges. Compatible replacement and alternative burr geometries are also available for users who want to maintain or further customise the grinder.

  • Choice of burr options: The DF54 V4 is available with standard uncoated stainless steel burrs or Red Titanium-coated 54mm burrs. The Red Titanium option provides a harder, more wear-resistant cutting surface for frequent use or long-term ownership.

  • Reduced static and clumping: A plasma ioniser and metal declumper help reduce static, clumping and stray grounds for a cleaner, more manageable grinding workflow.

  • Stepless grind adjustment: The micrometric adjustment collar allows small, precise changes from fine espresso through to AeroPress, pour-over, filter coffee and immersion brewing. Lower dial numbers generally correspond to finer settings, while higher numbers are coarser.

  • Compact, solid construction: The DF54 combines a small footprint and minimalist design with a sturdy body, making it suitable for kitchens and coffee stations where benchtop space is limited.

DF54 Grind Range and Starting Settings

The DF54 can be adjusted across a broad practical grind range, from fine espresso through to coarser filter and immersion brewing. Because the grinder uses stepless adjustment, the dial numbers are reference points rather than fixed settings.

The setting that works best can vary according to the grinder’s zero point, burr geometry, burr alignment, coffee, roast level, dose and brewing equipment. Recommended settings should therefore be treated as approximate starting ranges and refined according to flow, brew time and taste.

See our DF54 Grind Settings Guide for indicative starting ranges across espresso, moka pot, AeroPress, pour-over, French press and cold brew.

DF54 V3 and V4 Configurations

  • The DF54 is available in V3 and V4 configurations. Both use the same 54mm flat-burr platform, stepless grind adjustment, plasma ioniser and metal declumper.

  • The V4 is a minor production revision featuring a slightly widened exit chute. It retains the same core grinding platform and principal features as the V3.

  • For a detailed breakdown, see our DF54 V3 vs V4 comparison. Owners of an earlier DF54 can also retrofit the V4-style replacement exit chute.

  • All DF54 versions supplied by Grind Logic include an AU/NZ plug, local Australian support and a 12-month warranty.

Burr Options

The DF54 is supplied with 54mm Espresso/Multipurpose stainless steel flat burrs as standard. The DF54 V4 is also available with Red Titanium-coated burrs for customers looking for improved wear resistance and longer-term durability.

Our DF54 Burr Options Guide explains the differences between Espresso/Multipurpose and Brew geometries, as well as uncoated stainless steel and Red Titanium-coated surfaces.

Stainless Steel Red Titanium-Coated
Coating Uncoated AlTiN (aluminium titanium nitride)
Best suited to Typical home use and value-focused setups Frequent use or long-term ownership
Primary benefit Capable and durable standard burr set Improved wear resistance and longer-term durability
Cup profile Determined primarily by the underlying burr geometry Substantially the same underlying geometry; coating is primarily a durability upgrade
Available on DF54 V3 and V4 DF54 V4

Red Titanium burrs are primarily a durability-focused upgrade rather than a different flavour-focused burr platform. The coating is designed to improve surface hardness and resistance to wear, while the underlying burr geometry remains the more important influence on grind distribution and cup characteristics.

For cleaning, safe adjustment and ongoing care, read our DF54 Care and Maintenance Guide.

Would definitely recommend, thank you Grind Logic!

Took a while to get the grind right for my Lelete coffee machine, and the plate grinder produces a more balanced cup than the previous burr grinder. Also the crema is better developed with less coffee bitternes.

Thanks John R Thorp

I upgraded from a built in Delonghi La Specialista grinder to the DF54 and immediately noticed a difference in my flat whites. The grinder is nice and heavy which makes it feel sturdy. It’s also really quiet while running. Very happy with the purchase.

So much better than built in grinders on espresso machines! So much more predictable and precise. Great built quality too

I'm getting crema rich espresso out of a very average machine, so very happy. It's nice and quiet and produces what looks like a fluffy and consistent grind. It takes a while to grind 18g and the workflow is slower than my old hopper grinder if speed is important to you

Arrived quickly in good condition, well packaged. No complaints. Cheers Grind Logic👍

This grinder is great. It’s my first and there is very little retention of coffee grounds. It’s supposed to grow with you. It took me a few grinds to get the number on the dial right.

Very well built, quiet, infinitely adjustable grinding with zero retention. My espresso has improved in clarity and balance. Not messy, no jamming. Very happy customer here!

It’s a fantastic grinder for home coffee - very straightforward to setup and simple to use. It’s very efficient and really quiet. The flat burrs provide a rather different flavour profile to our previous conical burr grinders. It takes some getting used to and some experimenting with different blends, but we’re getting there. All in all, a fantastic grinder at a great price. Super quick service from Grind Logic too. Thanks!

Much quieter than I expected, a bit more residue than I expected but very understandable. Very very nice grinder. I don't see myself outgrowing the capability of the DF 54.

First electric grinder I've owned, and it does a very good job for my espresso. Good heft means it doesn't shift around much but it's also still fairly compact. Stepless adjustment is nice for particularly difficult blends. No complaints.

This is a fantastic grinder. I moved to this from a Eureka Minion, so the bar was high. Does not clump. As good as zero retention. Only minor thing is the grind dial is really tight. You need to hold the grinder when you adjust it.

As expected effortlessly and quietly gets the job done. Would definitely recommend but only time will tell if the rubber baffle and wooden top stand the test of time.

Excellent grinder

Extremely happy with this grinder. It was very easy to set up and to find the best grind sizes for the various coffee brewing I do. It has elevated my at home coffee experience and every cup is nuanced and delicious. With a little DIY (a closed cell mat underneath) the noise is minimal and does not disturb our easily spooked pets first thing in the morning. Would recommend to others 100%.

Sturdy build, great grind

Good even grind, build quality is top notch. A little slow but gives you time to do other stuff.
Don't need to RDT, in fact, RDT might cause chute to clog, just make sure you use the bellows to get zero retention. Everything is easy to dismantle to maintain. Actual flavour improvement from last grinder.

FAQs

What brew methods is the DF54 suitable for?

The DF54 works well across a wide range of brew methods, including espresso, moka pot, Aeropress, pour-over, and French press. Many users choose it as a dedicated all-rounder thanks to its stable alignment and low retention.

Is the DF54 a good first espresso grinder?

Yes. The DF54 is a strong first serious espresso grinder because it offers stepless adjustment, low retention, flat burrs and a compact footprint at a lower price than larger 64mm grinders.

Does the DF54 grind fine enough for espresso?

Yes, absolutely. The DF54 grinds fine enough for all espresso styles, including light-roast espresso. Its stepless adjustment system provides the precision needed to dial in espresso perfectly, with excellent repeatability between shots.

The DF54's grind range covers everything from ultra-fine espresso to coarse French press, making it a capable espresso grinder whether you're pulling traditional medium-roast shots or experimenting with modern light-roast recipes.

Are Grind Logic DF54 grinders Australian-compatible?

Yes. Grind Logic supplies DF54 grinders with an Australian/New Zealand Type I plug, local Australian warranty support and applicable Australian electrical compliance labelling.

What are your recommended settings for the DF54?

DF54 Grind Size Reference (approximate)

  • Espresso: ~5 – 15
  • Moka Pot: ~18 – 25
  • AeroPress: ~25 – 35
  • Pour-Over (V60 / Chemex): ~35 – 45
  • French Press / Cold Brew: ~45 – 55

For more detail, check out our Grind Range Guide for the DF54.

Should I get a DF54 or DF64 Gen 2?

The DF54 has a smaller and more compact form factor. It's ideal for limited bench top spaces. If you're looking for affordability, quality and versatility, the DF54 may be best.

The DF64 Gen 2 on the other hand offers, increased speed and power, a larger grind range, and greater opportunities for customisation and experimentation with a large range of after-market burr options.

For more details comparing the DF54 and DF64 Gen 2, check out our page: The DF54 vs the DF64 Gen 2: Which Grinder Is Right for You?

How much coffee retention does the DF54 grinder have?

The DF54 is a low retention grinder, with most users experiencing well under 0.4 grams of retained coffee grounds. This minimal retention makes it ideal as a single-dose grinder for home espresso and pour-over brewing.

To achieve near-zero retention, a light tap of the grinder or an optional bellows puff effectively clears any remaining grounds. Retention may vary slightly based on roast level, grind size, and humidity, but these variations are typically under 0.2g and won't noticeably affect your coffee's consistency or flavor.

Is the DF54 grinder suitable for filter coffee?

Yes. The DF54 is a versatile all-rounder that excels at both espresso and filter coffee. Its 54mm flat burrs deliver excellent results across all brewing methods, including pour-over, AeroPress, French press, and moka pot. The wide grind range and consistent particle distribution make it ideal for coffee lovers who switch between espresso and filter brewing.

While the stock burrs perform brilliantly for both styles, filter coffee enthusiasts can optimize their results further by upgrading to brew-focused 54mm burr sets. We stock alternative burrs designed for different flavor profiles—helping you dial in whether you prefer clarity-focused pour-overs or fuller-bodied immersion brews.

Do you sell the DF54 with Red Titanium burrs?

Yes. You can choose Red Titanium (AlTiN) 54mm burrs as a configuration option for the DF54 on this product page, as well as the standard stainless steel burrs.

Red Titanium burrs are a durability-focused upgrade designed to help maintain sharpness and consistent performance over time.

Offering the DF54 with Red Titanium burrs as a selectable option is still uncommon in Australia — many retailers only stock the standard burr set with any upgrades separately.

What is the difference between stainless steel and Red Titanium burrs on the DF54?

The stainless steel burrs are the standard option and work well for espresso and filter. The Red Titanium-coated burrs are a durability-focused upgrade designed to maintain sharpness and consistency over time.

Can I use the DF54 with a Breville 54mm portafilter?

Yes. The DF54 includes a 58mm dosing cup, while many Breville espresso machines use a 54mm portafilter. The grinder itself is fully compatible with Breville espresso setups — the difference is simply the size of the supplied dosing cup.

For an easier transfer of grounds, fit a compatible 54mm dosing funnel or the 53mm magnetic dosing funnel to your Breville portafilter, then pour the coffee from the DF54 dosing cup through the funnel.

This helps prevent spills and makes it easy to use the DF54 with 54mm Breville machines such as the Bambino, Bambino Plus and selected Barista models.

Is the DF54 the same as the Turin DF54?

Yes, fundamentally. A Turin DF54 and a DF54 sold without Turin branding are based on the same underlying grinder design: a compact, low-retention, single-dose grinder using a 54 mm flat-burr platform and stepless grind adjustment.

Turin is not the manufacturer of the DF54. It is a commercial brand under which the DF54 and other DF-series grinders are sold in certain markets. The same underlying DF-series grinders are sold internationally under different branding and distribution arrangements.

That does not mean every DF54 is identical in every detail. Production revisions, chute and declumper configurations, burr options, electrical specifications and included accessories can vary between suppliers and manufacturing batches.

Grind Logic sources its DF54 grinders independently and supplies Australian/New Zealand-market units with a Type I AU/NZ plug, direct warranty support, and access to DF54 replacement parts, accessories and compatible 54 mm burrs.

If you're comparing a Turin-branded DF54 with a DF54 sold under another name, see our Turin DF54 vs DF54 comparison for a detailed explanation of the branding, production differences and what actually matters when choosing a grinder.
