Reusable Stainless Steel Espresso Puck Screen

A reusable stainless steel espresso puck screen designed to protect the surface of the coffee bed and help keep your espresso machine’s shower screen cleaner.

This espresso puck screen sits directly on top of the tamped coffee before the portafilter is locked into the machine. During extraction, it creates a barrier between the incoming brew water and the coffee bed, helping reduce direct water impact and limiting the amount of coffee residue that reaches the group-head shower screen.

Depending on your espresso machine and basket, a puck screen may also help diffuse water across the surface of the coffee more evenly. It is not a substitute for an appropriate grind setting, even coffee distribution and a level tamp, but it can be a useful addition to a consistent espresso preparation workflow.

Available puck-screen styles

Fine Mesh – 150 Micron

The fine-mesh variant uses a closely woven stainless steel surface to provide broad coverage across the top of the espresso puck. The 150-micron specification refers to the mesh filtration rating rather than the overall thickness of the screen.

This style provides fine filtration but may retain more coffee particles and oils within the mesh, making regular rinsing and periodic deep cleaning particularly important.

Perforated

The perforated variant uses evenly distributed openings across a more rigid stainless steel surface. It provides a durable barrier between the coffee bed and the machine’s shower screen and is generally straightforward to handle and rinse after brewing.

How to use a coffee puck screen

1. Measure your coffee dose using an accurate espresso scale.
2. Distribute the ground coffee evenly throughout the basket. A WDT espresso distribution tool can help break apart clumps before tamping.
3. Tamp the coffee evenly and ensure that the surface is reasonably level.
4. Place the puck screen flat on top of the tamped coffee.
5. Lock the portafilter into the espresso machine without forcing it and begin extraction.
6. After brewing, carefully remove the screen, rinse it thoroughly and allow it to dry.

Caution: The puck screen and portafilter may be hot immediately after extraction. Allow them to cool before handling where necessary.

Choosing the correct puck-screen size

Measure the internal diameter of your filter basket before ordering. The puck screen must sit flat inside the basket without binding against the basket walls or resting on the upper rim.

Do not select a puck screen using the advertised portafilter size alone. A machine described as using a 58 mm, 54 mm or 51 mm portafilter may require a slightly different puck-screen diameter depending on the basket’s internal dimensions, wall shape and taper.

For example, different baskets used with nominally 58 mm espresso systems may accept screens described as either 58 mm or 58.5 mm. This does not mean that every 58.5 mm screen will fit every 58 mm basket.

Please measure the basket itself and compare the measurement with the exact diameter shown in the product variant before purchasing.

Check your basket headspace

A puck screen occupies some of the space between the tamped coffee and the espresso machine’s shower screen. If the portafilter becomes unusually difficult to lock into place, the screen does not sit flat, or the shower screen presses firmly against it, the coffee dose may be too high for the available basket headspace.

Reduce the dose slightly where necessary rather than forcing the portafilter into the machine. After changing the dose or adding a puck screen, observe the espresso flow and adjust your recipe if required. Our espresso dial-in guide explains how to adjust grind size, dose and yield systematically.

Care and cleaning

Rinse the puck screen thoroughly after each use and allow it to dry before storage. Coffee fines and oils can gradually collect inside fine mesh and small perforations, even when the surface appears clean.

Periodically soak the screen in a suitable espresso-machine cleaning solution, following the cleaning-product manufacturer’s dilution and handling instructions. Rinse thoroughly with clean water afterwards.

Avoid bending the screen or using sharp or highly abrasive cleaning tools, as these may damage the mesh or distort the screen.
