A reusable stainless steel espresso puck screen designed to protect the surface of the coffee bed and help keep your espresso machine’s shower screen cleaner.
This espresso puck screen sits directly on top of the tamped coffee before the portafilter is locked into the machine. During extraction, it creates a barrier between the incoming brew water and the coffee bed, helping reduce direct water impact and limiting the amount of coffee residue that reaches the group-head shower screen.
Depending on your espresso machine and basket, a puck screen may also help diffuse water across the surface of the coffee more evenly. It is not a substitute for an appropriate grind setting, even coffee distribution and a level tamp, but it can be a useful addition to a consistent espresso preparation workflow.
Why use an espresso puck screen?
- Helps keep the group-head shower screen cleaner
- Reduces direct water impact on the surface of the coffee puck
- May help limit erosion of the puck during pre-infusion and extraction
- May support more even delivery of water across the top of the coffee bed
- Reusable stainless steel construction
- Available in fine-mesh and perforated styles
- Easy to rinse and reuse as part of your daily espresso workflow
Available puck-screen styles
Fine Mesh – 150 Micron
The fine-mesh variant uses a closely woven stainless steel surface to provide broad coverage across the top of the espresso puck. The 150-micron specification refers to the mesh filtration rating rather than the overall thickness of the screen.
This style provides fine filtration but may retain more coffee particles and oils within the mesh, making regular rinsing and periodic deep cleaning particularly important.
Perforated
The perforated variant uses evenly distributed openings across a more rigid stainless steel surface. It provides a durable barrier between the coffee bed and the machine’s shower screen and is generally straightforward to handle and rinse after brewing.
How to use a coffee puck screen
- Measure your coffee dose using an accurate espresso scale.
- Distribute the ground coffee evenly throughout the basket. A WDT espresso distribution tool can help break apart clumps before tamping.
- Tamp the coffee evenly and ensure that the surface is reasonably level.
- Place the puck screen flat on top of the tamped coffee.
- Lock the portafilter into the espresso machine without forcing it and begin extraction.
- After brewing, carefully remove the screen, rinse it thoroughly and allow it to dry.
Caution: The puck screen and portafilter may be hot immediately after extraction. Allow them to cool before handling where necessary.
Choosing the correct puck-screen size
Nominal portafilter sizes such as 54 mm and 58 mm do not always correspond exactly to the internal diameter of the filter basket. For this reason, puck-screen sizing should be based on the dimensions of the basket rather than the nominal portafilter size alone.
Grind Logic puck screens are available in 53.5 mm and 58.5 mm diameters. The 53.5 mm screen is commonly suitable for machines using nominal 54 mm portafilters, while the 58.5 mm screen is commonly suitable for many standard 58 mm espresso systems.
The puck screen should sit flat inside the basket without binding against the basket walls or resting on the upper rim. Basket dimensions can vary between espresso-machine manufacturers and between original and aftermarket baskets, so measuring your basket is recommended if you are unsure.
Portafilter compatibility guide
| Espresso machine or system | Nominal portafilter size | Recommended screen | Compatibility guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breville / Sage Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo-Temp Pro | 54 mm | 53.5 mm | Commonly suitable for Breville / Sage 54 mm baskets. Check the internal dimensions if using an aftermarket basket or if unsure. |
| Other espresso machines using compatible 54 mm baskets | 54 mm | 53.5 mm | May be suitable where the basket provides sufficient clearance for a 53.5 mm screen. Measure the internal basket diameter if unsure. |
| 58 mm E61 machines, including many Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, Bezzera and similar machines | 58 mm | 58.5 mm | Generally suitable for compatible 58 mm baskets. Basket dimensions can vary, particularly with aftermarket baskets. |
| Gaggia Classic / Classic Pro | 58 mm | 58.5 mm | Generally suitable for compatible 58 mm baskets. Check the internal dimensions of the fitted basket if unsure. |
| Rancilio Silvia / Silvia Pro / Silvia Pro X | 58 mm | 58.5 mm | Generally suitable for compatible 58 mm baskets. Check the internal dimensions of the fitted basket if unsure. |
| Breville / Sage Dual Boiler, Oracle and Oracle Touch | 58 mm | 58.5 mm | Generally suitable for compatible 58 mm baskets. Check the internal dimensions if using an aftermarket basket or if unsure. |
| Other espresso machines using compatible 58 mm baskets | 58 mm | 58.5 mm | May be suitable where the basket provides sufficient clearance for a 58.5 mm screen. Measure the internal basket diameter if unsure. |
| 51 mm, 53 mm or 57 mm systems | Varies | No direct size match | The current 53.5 mm and 58.5 mm options are not specifically sized for these systems. Measure the basket carefully before purchasing. |
Important: This table is a general guide. Espresso-machine manufacturers may use different baskets within the same nominal portafilter size, and aftermarket baskets may have different internal dimensions. If you are unsure, measure the internal diameter of the basket you intend to use before ordering.
If you are unsure which size to choose, measure the internal diameter of your filter basket before ordering.
Check your basket headspace
A puck screen occupies some of the space between the tamped coffee and the espresso machine’s shower screen. If the portafilter becomes unusually difficult to lock into place, the screen does not sit flat, or the shower screen presses firmly against it, the coffee dose may be too high for the available basket headspace.
Reduce the dose slightly where necessary rather than forcing the portafilter into the machine. After changing the dose or adding a puck screen, observe the espresso flow and adjust your recipe if required. Our espresso dial-in guide explains how to adjust grind size, dose and yield systematically.
Care and cleaning
Rinse the puck screen thoroughly after each use and allow it to dry before storage. Coffee fines and oils can gradually collect inside fine mesh and small perforations, even when the surface appears clean.
Periodically soak the screen in a suitable espresso-machine cleaning solution, following the cleaning-product manufacturer’s dilution and handling instructions. Rinse thoroughly with clean water afterwards.
Avoid bending the screen or using sharp or highly abrasive cleaning tools, as these may damage the mesh or distort the screen.
