FAQs
What flavour profile should I expect with Lab Sweet burrs?
The SSP Lab Sweet geometry is designed to shift your cup profile toward enhanced sweetness, balanced body, and clarity across brew methods. These burrs are designed with a distinctive cutting geometry that promotes a consistent particle distribution, which can help drive a more uniform extraction and nuanced flavour expression compared with many standard replacement burrs.
Lab Sweet burrs also deliver some clarity and complexity, but not as aggressively and other burr sets such as the SSP multi-purpose burrs.
Flavor profile is of course also dependent on a range of other factors including roast level, and brewing methods among other things.
Are these burrs good for both espresso and filter brewing?
While Lab Sweet burrs work well for both espresso and filter brewing, many users find they truly excel in filter and medium-body styles. Their geometry favours sweetness, body, and balanced flavour, making them especially rewarding for pourovers and drip coffee — though with proper dial-in they also produce enjoyable espresso shots
What’s the differencebetween V2 and V3 versions?
The V2 and V3 share the same core Lab Sweet flavour profile. V3 introduces subtle
geometry refinements that may improve uniformity at finer settings, but it is
not inherently “better” than V2. Differences are incremental and depend on
grinder setup and brewing style.
What's the difference between Silver Knight and Red Speed Coating?
Silver Knight (diamond-like carbon, or “DLC”) reduces surface friction and improves corrosion resistance, contributing to smoother operation and longer burr life.
Red Speed (titanium aluminium carbon nitride, or “TiAlCN”) prioritises extreme wear resistance for long-term or high-volume use.
Both coatings primarily affect durability rather than flavour, with any changes in grind behaviour being secondary and grinder-dependent.
Do these burrs require seasoning or a break-in period?
New flat burrs, including SSP Lab Sweet, often change slightly as they settle in with use. Many users and SSP reps suggest that performance becomes more consistent after grinding a few kilos of coffee (often cited around 2–5 kg), with some experienced users noting continued gradual improvements up to ~8 kg or more. Burrs are fully usable out of the box, and seasoning typically occurs naturally during normal daily use rather than requiring a rigid break-in routine.
Are these burrs easy to install and maintain?
Installation involves removing your existing burr set and installing the new burrs with correct orientation and alignment. As with any precision flat burrs, careful installation helps ensure optimal performance. Ongoing maintenance is straightforward, regular cleaning and occasional inspection are typically all that’s needed to maintain consistent grind quality over time.
Which grinders are these burrs compatible with?
These are standard 64 mm flat burrs and are compatible with many grinders designed for 64 mm flat burr sets, including the DF64 Gen 2, the DF64V, Option-O Lagom P64, Mazzer Super Jolly, and other grinders that accept standard 64 mm burr geometry.
Some grinders (such as the Fellow Ode) use 64 mm burrs but may require specific mounting patterns or manufacturer-approved burr variants, so compatibility should be confirmed before purchase. Always check your grinder’s specifications to ensure compatibility.
